Guenther Koehne

Deputy Director & Chief of Bone Marrow Transplantation, Hematologic Oncology and Benign Hematology

    Personal profile

    About

Dr. Guenther Koehne is a physician-scientist who has particular expertise in autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantations and cellular immunotherapies. Dr. Koehne has developed active clinical trials incorporating adoptive cell therapy strategies following allogeneic stem cell transplantation for patients with leukemia, MDS, high-risk multiple myeloma and plasma cell leukemia At MSKCC, He has developed new principles of generation and monitoring of donor-derived antigen-specific T cells with pools of overlapping Penta decapeptides for adoptive cell therapeutic strategies. This methodology also permits the determination of specific epitopes derived from the antigen and their specific HLA- restriction. He first successfully established the generation of donor-derived CMV pp65-specific T cells for patients with CMV reactivation following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and initiated FDA approved phase I and II trials to determine safety and efficacy of the adoptively transferred donor-derived antigen specific T cells. This principle approach has subsequently been applied to the generation of donor-derived WT1-specific T cells for patients with high-risk multiple myeloma and/or plasma cell leukemia. Dr. Koehne has obtained FDA approval for several new innovative trials; including the administration of donor-derived WT1-specific T cells from related and unrelated donors for administration following T-cell depleted allogeneic transplants. In addition, he has developed a clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of a heteroclitic WT1 peptide vaccine administered following autologous stem cell transplantation in patients with multiple myeloma.

As the Deputy Director of MCI and the Chief of BMT & Hematologic Oncology, Dr. Koehne oversees and directs the development of our clinical and translational scientific programs at MCI. As the Principal Investigator of multiple investigator-initiated trials, he oversees clinical management of the patients as well as the scientific correlative studies of these trials.

As the appointed Professor of Medicine & Chairman of the Department of Translational Medicine at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) of Florida International University, he is pursuing to enhance the collaborations of basic research scientists at FIU and the physicians as clinical trial investigators at MCI to build a leading translational research program.
